You Get What You Tolerate
Stop tolerating the behavior you don’t expect
Do you feel you don’t get the respect you deserve?
It’s not the question of deserving respect. Respect has to be earned. But you also have to show people how they should treat you.
People won’t give you respect if you tolerate any less. They’ll get by with any behavior you put up with.
If you tolerate disrespect from them, you’ll get so. But if you don’t tolerate unacceptable behaviors from people, then no one will dare to treat you with such behavior.
You won’t get respect if you tolerate any less
You set the example of the behavior you expect from the people by the behavior you tolerate. People won’t just treat you better than what you tolerate.
If they see you tolerate shitty behavior, they’ll treat you like shit. No better. But if you refuse to tolerate shitty behavior from them, they’ll treat you with respect.
You set the standard behavior you expect from people. Don’t tolerate the behavior you don’t want people to treat you with. You might not get any better behavior from them if you let them.
Don’t become a patsy so people can behave any way they want
Once a patsy is not always a patsy. Just because you’ve been a patsy all your life doesn’t mean you have to be a patsy going forward.
Even if you were a patsy — people treated you the way they wanted — you can do better now. You can change. People should change their behaviors toward you too.
Show people how to treat you. Don’t tolerate disrespect from anyone anymore. You don’t get to live your life twice.
You can’t do anything about what happened in the past. But what will happen in the future is in your hands. You have a choice.
Everyone wants others to treat them with respect. You wouldn’t be the first person to expect respect from others. Even if you never expected people to treat you with respect, now’s the time to change that.
